Flanders attaches great importance to peace and human rights in its foreign policy and has therefore always had a keen eye for the specific situation in Northern Ireland.
The Diplomatic Representation has supported a number of initiatives over the past year relating to the First World War in collaboration with, amongst others, the Public Records Office Northern Ireland and the Bellanaleck Local History Group.
The Government of Flanders has also set up a project together with UNWTO on respectful commemorative tourism "Harnessing the potential of Tourism to Historical Conflict Sites in Advancing Peace: Reflecting on the Past and Inspiring the Future." In addition to this, there has been extensive collaboration with the Northern Ireland executive and Ulster University, as well as with Basque partners. The report was published in December 2017:
